Spoofing

There has been an increase in "spoofing" in the area. "Spoofing" is when the caller ID or call display is manipulated to show trusted phone numbers, thus tricking you into believing you are speaking with someone from a trusted source.

If you receive a call from someone advising your social insurance number has been compromised or used in a fraudulent way - please DO NOT give any personal information or details to the caller. Don't be afraid to ask questions - Who are you? Where are you calling from? Record the number they appear to be calling from and hang up. You can follow up with this number to confirm the call was from a trusted source. Fraudulent calls can also be reported to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre, 1-888-495-8501.
